Trauma-Informed Therapeutic Interventions at The Stepz Group

(EMDR) Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

Empowering Children with EMDR

At The Stepz Group, we understand that not all young individuals find traditional talk therapies suitable for their needs. Our therapeutic interventions cater to each child’s unique requirements, incorporating models such as play therapy, creative work, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).

EMDR has proven to be highly effective in addressing trauma and emotional difficulties, especially for children who struggle with verbal communication. This section will explore EMDR and its positive impact on the lives of the children we work with.

Understanding EMDR:

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process traumatic memories and experiences. Developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR is widely recognised as an evidence-based treatment for trauma-related issues.

How EDMR Works:

Traumatic memories can become “stuck” in the brain, leading to distressing symptoms and emotional difficulties. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, often through eye movements, to facilitate cognitive and emotional processing. This helps desensitise the traumatic memories and reprocess them in a healthier way.

EDMR for Children:

In our work with children, we have seen the powerful impact of EMDR in helping them process and resolve trauma. Children may find it difficult to express their emotions through traditional talk therapy, making EMDR an excellent alternative. With less reliance on verbal communication, EMDR allows children to process emotions through bilateral stimulation.

The EMDR Process

During an EMDR session, the child is guided through a series of steps to explore traumatic memories. The therapist facilitates bilateral stimulation, which can involve following the therapist’s fingers with their eyes or using other sensory techniques.

This process activates both sides of the brain, helping the child process traumatic memories in a safe environment. The result is often a reduction in emotional intensity and a healthier understanding of their experiences.

Benefits of EMDR for Children

Effective Trauma Resolution:

EMDR helps children process trauma-related symptoms like anxiety, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts effectively.

Quick Results:

EMDR often yields faster results compared to traditional talk therapies, leading to positive changes in a shorter time.

Non-Invasive:

EMDR requires minimal verbal communication, making it suitable for children who struggle with expressing themselves.

Client-Centred Approach:

EMDR is tailored to each child’s individual needs, ensuring the therapy aligns with their unique experiences and challenges.
